Purchasing train tickets
Online in advance:
You can purchase your train ticket online in advance by creditcard at the NS website. These tickets are Eur 1 cheaper than from the machines at the station.
To purchase in advance:
https://www.ns.nl/producten/en/losse-kaartjes-toeslagen
Buy a single ticket so one-way. Make sure the date is correct, the time is less important since the ticket is valid all day for the chosen destination. You will receive an e-mail confirmation with a link to download the ticket.
You can store the purchased ticket to the NS app ticket section at your mobile phone. To do so, download the NS app first. Use the QR code at the mobile ticket to open the platform gates. With the NS app you can also plan your trips.
If you do not use the mobile ticket, bring a PRINT of the PDF ticket so you can show this on request. Use the QR code on the print to open the platform gates. Showing a PDF on your mobile is NOT considered to be a valid ticket.
Buy a train ticket at the station: train tickets can also be bought from the ticket machines at Schiphol airport or Utrecht central station. The machines accept the main bank debit cards (Maestro) and credit cards.
See this link for more information about ticket machines.
(where you read OV-chipkaart: this is a public translation debit card used in the Netherlands. This is usually not relevant for foreign travellers).
