Description
We present our approach to narrowband channelisation in the next-generation GPU-based correlator for the MeerKAT Extension. Unlike the existing MeerKAT narrowband channeliser, the bandpass response is almost completely flat across the output bandwidth. This is achieved by a hybrid approach to reducing bandwidth: a time-domain FIR filter does an initial bandwidth reduction, while the remainder is handled in the frequency domain by discarding channels.
Intuitively this would seem to be more expensive. However, we show that the reduced constraints on the low-pass filter response allow for the number of taps to be substantially decreased.
