Description

I will present an update of the current operational status and future plans of the CASPER-enabled Submillimeter Array SMA. The telescope team has plans for continued operations and for upgrades on both short and long term time scales. A strategic plan in the coming decade focuses on the future of VLBI including the advancement of the EHT and space missions. Non VLBI science focuses include transient follow up and solar astronomy. All of the science goals benefit from expanded bandwidth and simultaneous operation of multiple receiver bands, enabling frequency-phase-transfer (FPT) for improved phase calibration at higher frequencies.
